Description The Enterprise Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ANA provides visionary, strategic leadership in partnership with the Boards of Directors and has operational responsibility for management of staff and implementation of essential association programs for ANA, ANCC and the Foundation. ANA is also the parent organization of three other wholly owned subsidiaries where the CEO has a limited role in oversight and participation in governance of these entities: American Academy of Nursing; Institute for Nursing Research and Education; and American Nurses Service Corporation. In partnership with the ANA Board of Directors, constituent/state nurses associations, organizational affiliates and other partners advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public, and improves nursing practice and promotes high-quality healthcare services through credentialing and related services. The CEO creates an atmosphere that ensures an optimal balance of innovation, efficiency, and continuous improvement in streamlined processes, systems, use of resources and technology. The CEO demonstrates flexibility to adapt to the changing healthcare environment and strategic investments.

1. Supports the Enterprise Boards of Directors and other key governance structures’ functions including but not limited: election/appointment, development, meetings, strategic planning, and decision making.
2. Provides visionary and strategic leadership in design, development, promotion, delivery, quality, and evaluation of programs, products and services.
3. Develops, implements, and evaluates integrated business operations consistent with the goals of the enterprise.
4. Hires, develops, leads, coaches, evaluates, and manages the Enterprise’s human resources.
5. Ensures the designs, development and delivery of programs that assure the Association and each of its entities pursues their stated missions, as well as strategic goals, objectives, and activities through major activities including but not limited to:
• Communications and public relations programs that convey a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders
• Public policy and political advocacy
• Aggressive business development initiatives to build non-dues revenue
• Progressive and innovative membership recruitment and retention
• Authoritative and leading credentialing programs
• Aggressive nursing philanthropy
6. Recommends yearly budget for Board approval and prudently manages organization's resources within those budget guidelines using sound financial and management practices.
7. Builds, maintains and enhances partnerships within the enterprise, the nursing profession and healthcare community to further the mission and goals of the Enterprise.

• The CEO is employed by and reports to the ANA Board of Directors.
• The CEO supervises the Executive Directors/Executive Vice Presidents of ANA, ANCC, and the Foundation as well as others considered part of the executive leadership team including but not limited to the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Products and Marketing Officer.

1. Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive leadership experience in nursing or healthcare administration, association or non-profit management, or health policy with supervisory responsibilities
2. Minimum of 5 years of executive-level experience, preferably in association and/or non-profit management
3. Demonstrated track record of:
a. achieving goals
b. working with complex organizations
c. managing high performing teams
d. advocacy and political influence
e. collaboration with internal and external diverse constituencies/organizations
f. valuing and enabling diversity and inclusion in programs as well as staff
g. working with boards of directors
h. financial acumen
i. pursuing revenue generation activities with clear calculated risk/benefits
j. participation in philanthropic activities

1. Graduate degree in nursing, health care, business, policy, administration or related field
2. Doctoral or other terminal degree preferred

1. Visionary leadership with the ability to design and execute a strategic plan
2. Knowledgeable about nursing, industry trends, health care, and advocacy in challenging healthcare political climate
3. Strong verbal and written communication skills (English), including public speaking and writing
4. Strong interpersonal skills that include the ability to inspire and motivate; build collaborative relationships with diverse constituents; effective at conflict resolution and facilitation
5. The ability to develop and foster a healthy organizational culture; excellent organizational development, delegation and personnel management skills
6. Ability to manage personal well-being in a high stress role
7. Excellent ability to manage and prioritize a large, complex workload
8. Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills
9. Experience managing a complex budget
10. Aptitude for innovation and entrepreneurial activities
11. Skilled with current computer and internet technologies

Additional Qualifications
• CAE Certification or related management or professional credential(s) preferred.
• Willing to reside in the Maryland, Virginia or Washington, DC metropolitan area at least 80% of the time.
• Ability to travel to domestic and international meetings via plane, train, and car.
