E Ink is seeking a creative scientist to join a team making innovations in electrophoretic ink materials systems. You will be primarily responsible for evaluation of new molecules and materials for use in technologies advancing particle stabilization/dispersion, microencapsulation, electrophoretic ink formulations and thin film coatings. This position is with E Ink’s Research Department.
Responsibilities • Work with senior technical staff to conduct laboratory experiments primarily in the area of reaction mechanisms involving small molecules, oligomers and polymers
• Work with synthetic chemists to characterize intermediates and desired target molecules
• Define chemical structure property relationships to achieve fundamental understanding of material performance and capabilities and propose relevant reaction mechanisms
• Collaborate with analytical chemists to develop optimal methods for quality determination and performance assessments
• Work within a cross-functional team to design and optimize processes for delivering high performance electrophoretic displays
• Document the results in comprehensive technical reports and communicate to the E Ink technical staff
• Search and analyze publications, patents and technical literature to help the project needs
• Work safely in the lab, adhering to the company’s safety protocols and policies
Qualifications • Ph.D in Physical Organic Chemistry
• 0-5 years of industry experience studying mechanisms of organic reactions. Experience with crosslinking of polymeric systems is a plus.
• Strong physical organic chemistry background and practical skills and ability to study reaction kinetics and interpret the results to uncover reaction mechanisms
• Experience with UV curing and reactions in non-polar media
• Strong organic laboratory techniques including characterization of organic compounds by distillation, filtration, extraction, crystallization, and chromatography
• Experience with analytical equipment and methods, such as NMR, FTIR, GC, GC/MS and HPLC techniques
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a laboratory notebook with experimental plans and results, scientific observations, and equipment design concepts
• Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to write scientific reports/technical updates, and assist in preparing invention disclosures/manuscripts for patents/publication
• Proficiency with software programs such as MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SciFinder, ChemDraw/BioVia, etc.
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
• Aptitude for acquiring new knowledge and skills, and interest in working on electrophoretic ink materials systems
• Familiarity with lab safety practices, Safety Data Sheet (SDS), knowledge of OSHA regulations, and training in EHS lab safety compliance
