E Ink is seeking a creative chemist to join a team making innovations in electrophoretic ink materials systems. You will be primarily responsible for synthesis of organic molecules and materials for use in technologies advancing particle stabilization/dispersion, microencapsulation, electrophoretic ink formulations and thin film coatings. This position is with E Ink’s Research Department.
Responsibilities • Work with senior technical staff to conduct laboratory experiments primarily in the area of organic synthesis (small molecules, oligomers/polymers)
• Design, synthesize and characterize the intermediates and the desired target molecules
• Assist senior technical staff in transitioning finalized synthetic procedures to toll manufacturer(s) for large-scale production
• Define chemical structure property relationships to achieve a fundamental understanding of material performance and capabilities
• Collaborate with analytical chemists to develop optimal methods for quality determination and performance assessments
• Work within a cross-functional team to design and optimize processes for delivering high performance electrophoretic displays
• Document the results in comprehensive technical reports and communicate to E Ink technical staff
• Search and analyze publications, patents and technical literature to help the project needs
• Work safely in lab adhering to company’s safety protocols and policies
Qualifications • BS/BA with 3+ years of experience or MS with 1+ year of experience majoring in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science
• 0-5 years of industry experience in design and synthesis of small molecules/polymers
• Strong synthetic organic chemistry background and practical skills and the ability to perform micro-scale reactions and large-scale reactions (mg– kg scale)
• Familiarity with Schlenk techniques, handling air and moisture-sensitive materials, and high-pressure reactions
• Hands-on experience carrying out multi-step organic synthesis, purification and characterization of organic compounds using standard laboratory techniques including distillation, filtration, extraction, crystallization, and chromatography
• Experience with analytical equipment and methods, such as NMR, FTIR, GC, GC/MS and HPLC techniques
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a laboratory notebook with experimental plans and results, scientific observations, and equipment design concepts
• Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to write scientific reports/technical updates and assist in preparing invention disclosures/manuscripts for patent/publication
• Proficient with software programs such as MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SciFinder, ChemDraw/BioVia, etc.
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
• Aptitude in acquiring new knowledge and skills, and interest in working on electrophoretic ink materials systems
• Familiarity with lab safety practices, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and knowledge of OSHA regulations, and training in EHS lab safety compliance
