Generation of Promise Summary:
Generation of Promise, a program of Focus: HOPE, operates a youth leadership and social justice education program for an annual class of sixty high school students. The program connects young leaders from high schools in Detroit and program the suburbs for an immersive ten-month experiential learning program during their junior year, and continues to work with students as seniors and alumni. The program is designed to support the development of leadership skills, relationship-building, cultural competence, and social justice activism. Participants remain engaged as alumni during their 12th grade year as peer leaders to the junior cohort, facilitators and organizers of campaigns in their schools and communities, and representatives on the program’s Board committees.

Position Overview:
The Program Manager coordinates and conducts all functions of the Generation of Promise Program as related to the mission and goals of the organization. In communication with the Generation of Promise Board and Focus: HOPE liaison, this person supports the program’s growth, external connections, and the strategic direction of the organization. This is a full-time position. Effectiveness in the role will typically grow over time, so candidates should be willing to make a commitment of at least two or three program cycles.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Program implementation and day-to-day operation
o Plan and execute Generation of Promise program year, including monthly program events, field trips, parent meetings, and annual graduation ceremony.
o Serve as lead facilitator for the participants at all program events.
o Train and supervise all program volunteers, including 10 adult volunteer facilitators. (Recruit additional volunteers as needed.)
o Execute annual recruitment and selection process for incoming student cohort.
o Execute annual program evaluation process and related reporting.
o Serve as communication liaison between students, parents, school contacts, and other volunteers.
o Maintain record of and execute administrative functions of the program, as they relate to communication needs, financial recording, filing, copying, binding, scanning, emails, etc.

• Developing and managing community relationships
o Manage relationships with and conduct periodic visit to participating schools.
o Cultivate and maintain relationships with community groups which host participants for program days during the program year.
o Cultivate community partnerships essential to the program’s success.
o Coordinate involvement from Generation of Promise alumni.

• Shaping and supporting the Generation of Promise Board of Trustees
o Coordinate involvement of members of the Board of Trustees, including support for regular meetings, and coordinating committee involvement.
o Collaborate with Board Chair to identify Program issues requiring Board attention and structuring tactical steps for their discussion and resolution.
o Facilitate a high level of communication and coordination between the Board Chair and Focus: HOPE executive supporting the Program.

• Supporting organizational growth
o Co-lead strategic planning to ensure that Generation of Promise can successfully fulfill its mission and vision in an evolving regional landscape
o Support fundraising efforts of the program, including grant-writing and event planning.

Qualifications:
• Strong commitment to civil and human rights.
• Understanding of cultural diversity and regional race relations history. A working knowledge of Detroit, and a great love for Detroit communities!
• Ability to work comfortably and effectively with high school age students.
• Ability to work comfortably and effectively in multicultural environments.
• Strong large and small group facilitation skills.
• Skills in program coordination or event-planning, including ability to arrange complex agendas.
• Ability to work comfortably and effectively with adult stakeholders (school contacts, organizational donors, board members and program volunteers).
• Ability to manage responsibilities in multiple discipline areas, including planning, organizing and documenting tasks.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills, including experience with grant-writing or fundraising.
• In-depth familiarity with Google applications (forms, drive, docs, sheets), and Microsoft Office.
• Valid driver’s license; solid driver’s record.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts, Education, related field; or, equivalent of relevant experience.
• Experience or demonstrated commitment to youth development, social justice education, and cultural diversity– including experience in facilitating youth programming.
• Commitment to social justice principles and practices.
• Willingness to commit to a demanding (yet rewarding) role in a non-profit atmosphere, to navigate ambiguity and to overcome resource constraints in a dynamic environment, maintaining focus on the program and its goals and inspiring others to do the same.

Supervision Received:
Perform duties under the supervision of the Board of Trustees of the Generation of Promise program and Focus: HOPE Administration.
