Description The Screener is responsible for screening donors for eligibility to donate plasma, and where allowed by state regulations, are responsible for performing moderate complexity testing.
Essential Duties:
•Greets and directs donors to the appropriate areas to ensure that donors are treated with courtesy and professional respect.
•Conducts donor orientation to ensure the well-being and safety of both the donor and the plasma.
•Performs and documents quality control activities to ensure results are recorded on the appropriate forms, logs or graphs.
•Performs the cleaning, maintenance and stocking of the screening area.
•Maintains confidentiality in all record keeping activities.
•Performs donor screening (e.g., temperatures, blood pressures, pulses, weight, hematocrit, total protein, urinalysis, etc.) using the appropriate technique and records results.
•Performs donor interviews to obtain medical history and records the correct information on the appropriate forms.
•Ensures that new donors are processed immediately upon sign-in and addresses donor questions and concerns.
•Performs clerical duties (e.g., files charts, answers incoming calls, etc.).
•Posts donor testing results in appropriate records.

In states where allowed:

•Perform specimen processing, test performance and report results (fingersticks, testing of hematocrit to total protein).
•Participate in center leadership/CLIA meetings and contribute to continuous improvement projects within the center.
•Adhere to quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
•Perform and document proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
•Follow and document the corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

Laboratory Equipment, such as hematostat, refractometer, donor vital sign machine, thermometers, scales, etc.

Job Specifications:
•minimum High School Diploma
•Must have documentation of training appropriate for testing performed prior to performing donor screening independently. Such training must ensure that the individual has:

1.the skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling and processing of specimens;
2.the skills required for implementing all standard laboratory procedures;
3.the skills required for performing each test method and for proper instrument use;
4.the skills required for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed;
5.a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage;
6.the skills required to implement the quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory;
7.an awareness of the factors that influence test results; and
8.the skills required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control sample valued prior to reporting patient test results.

•Demonstrate consistency and reliability (e.g., good attendance, punctuality, flexibility with assigned shift, etc.).
•Needs good communication skills, and must be able to record words and numbers legibly and accurately.
•Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
•Ability to read numbers on screening equipment and demonstrate mathematical skills.
•Must possess any licenses or certificates required by the state.
•Ability to speak, write and read English. Bilingual abilities may be required in some locations.
•Must be available to work flexible days and hours when necessary. Relocation flexibility is preferred.

Working Conditions/Physical & Mental Demands:
Environmentally controlled lab areas of donor center. May be required to enter an environment with a temperature of -30°C for short periods of time.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Ability to tug, lift, and pull up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Be able to bend, stoop or kneel.
Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.
Must be able to work in fast paced environment and multi-task.
